Ahh, Northrend, the last station on your long way from level 1-80. Or from level 70-80 if you are leveling a BC character. This Mage leveling guide 70-80 will give you an overview over the best route through the cold continent.

I’m going to assume that you are already familiar with your talent build and you are probably leveling with the Mage’s AoE Frost spec. So let’s jump right into the interesting part: Your questing path.

There are more quests in Northrend than in any other area you have encountered before. That means if you don’t get your questing path dialed you will waste more time than ever before, too! You are one step away from hitting 80 and enjoying the endgame content with your friends but it will still take you days or weeks to get through Northrend without an efficient questing path…

Now let’s take a look at your way through the cold continent:

Starting Zone: Borean Tundra (70-72)

No matter if you are fighting for the Alliance or for the Horde, the Borean Tundra is a great place to start your journey through the last remaining levels.

The Howling Fjord (72-74)

The Howling Fjord is the second starting zone. If you want you can also start exploring Northrend from here but I somehow prefer the Tundra as my first waypoint. That makes the Howling Fjord the second area to visit.

Dragonblight (74-76)

The third part of your journey should give you another two full levels.

Grizzly Hills (76-77)

The Grizzly Hills will be the first area where you will feel like leveling gets harder. You will spend more time and get less experience and probably won’t get two full levels like in the last areas.

At level 77 you can finally purchase Cold Weather Flying and start travelling the easy way again. Don’t forget to get it ASAP as it will greatly help you leveling.

Zul’Drak (77-79)

The next step in this mage leveling guide 70-80 leads you to Zul’Drak. Can you feel the tension building up? Only a little bit more experience and you will finally ding 80!

Icecrown (79-80)

My mage leveling guide 70-80 recommends you to get your last experience right here. In fact there are more options right now, but I think the Icecrown represents what lies ahead of you in the best possible way. If you have made it this far, level 80 is in your reach. Grab it!

Playing a Mage is lots of fun, but keeping track of your stats is a hassle sometimes. I want to help you get your numbers crunched and give you a fast overview in my WoW Mage Stat priority guide.

The guide should be viable both for leveling and raiding, but raiding needs a lot more fine-tuning as you can probably imagine. But after reading the priorities you should get the idea!

Mage Stats Explanation

The first part of my WoW mage stat priority guide is an explanation of the stats themselves. You have to know the actual numbers if you want to crunch them later on. Here are the most important stats for your Mage and how they work:

Spell Power

Spell Power increases the damage of your abilities. It’s always a flat amount, that makes calculating your bonus damage very simple. It should be obvious that every mage has to collect as much +spell damage as possible.

Critical Strike Rating

This stat increases your chance to critically hit your enemy with your spells. Critical hits deal 150% damage if you don’t have any talents to increase it.

Unfortunately calculating the bonus you get from your hit rating is not as easy as calculating the bonus from spell power. To get the actual bonus crit. hit percentage you do this:

(Critical Strike Rating) : (variable depending on level) = +bonus crit. hit chance

To make it easier for you: Once you hit level 80 you will need 46 crit. rating to get +1% crit. hit chance for your spells.

Intellect

Intellect (or just Int.) increases both your critical strike rating and your mana pool. This time it’s even more difficult to crunch the numbers. If you want to know how much your Int. contributes to your critical hit chance, you have to take into account your level and your class.

Again, I will make things easy for you. Here is the Int. you need at different levels to get +1% crit. hit chance:

• Level 60: 59 Int.
• Level 70: 80 Int.
• Level 80: 166 Int.

Stamina

Stamina gives you more health, but it’s only important while you are leveling. Face it – Mages are going to die anyway if the boss hits them.

Hit Rating

When you are raiding, your Hit Rating is important. Make sure you know how much Hit Rating you need in order to always hit the boss (or get to the point of diminishing returns). Then get the gear BEFORE you join the first raid. Nothing is more annoying than a character asking “How many XYZ-rating do I need?” right before the boss-encounter starts.

WoW Mage Stat Priority

No matter if you are leveling or raiding, here’s the priority that my WoW Mage stat priority guide highly recommends:

1. Spell Power
2. Critical Strike Rating
3. Intellect
4. Stamina / Hit Rating

Note that it’s stamina for leveling purposes and Hit Rating for raid parties.

A last advice I want to give you is this: Although some stats are more important than others doesn’t mean you can spend all your resources only on the most important stats and neglect the rest. If you do this you are going to fail. You need a certain amount of each to be successful.

Before I jump to the glyphs, I want to recap when the glyph slots are unlocked. Maybe you already know this, but if you are new to WoW, you might want to know! J

Minor Glyph Slots: Level 15, Level 50 and Level 70.

Major Glyph Slots: Level 15, Level 30 and Level 80.

Now, which are the best Frost Mage leveling glyphs? The ones that best support the Frost Mages AoE leveling strategy! In case you are unsure how to play your Frost Mage: The strategy is to pull 10+ mobs and nuke them down with all your AoE spells. Frost Nova, Blizzard and Cone of Cold.

This way you will kill off as many mobs as possible in the least amount of time. More exp + Spend less time = Win!

Highly Recommended: The Best Major Frost Mage leveling Glyphs!

Frost Nova – Your Frost Nova targets can take an additional 20% damage before the Frost Nova effect automatically breaks.

Ice Armor – Your Ice Armor and Frost Armor spells grant an additional 50% armor and resistance.

Ice Barrier – Increases the amount of damage absorbed by your Ice Barrier by 30%.

I guess you can already see where this is going. Ice Barrier adds a lot of survivability. When fighting hordes of mobs you can easily get overwhelmed and can always use some additional protection. Nothing wastes more time than dying.

Frost Nova is one of your core abilities and this glyph gives you additional time to get distance and nuke your targets.

Don’t Forget The Minor Frost Mage Leveling Glyphs

Arcane Intellect – Reduces the mana cost of your Arcane Intellect and Arcane Brilliance spells by 50%.

Frost Armor - Increases the duration of your Frost Armor and Ice Armor spells by 30 min.

Slow Fall - Your Slow Fall spell no longer requires a reagent.

I’m not going to lie: Those minor glyphs are probably the only choice for every mage and don’t add much to your AoE Frost strategy. But they still help you to level faster because they take care of those little problems that would rob you of valuable seconds all the time.

1. Accept [Reclaiming Sunstrider Isle] – Kill 8 Wyrms and hand in the quest.
2. Accept [Unfortunate Measures], [Solanian’s Belongings], [A Fistfull of Silvers], [Thirst Unending] and [The Shrine of Dath’Remar].
3. Start killing Wyrms and gather 6 Arcane Slivers. Use your Arcane Torrent on one Wyrm.
4. Head over to 33, 22 and get 8 Collars by killing the Springpaws.
5. Turn in [Unfortunate Measures], [A Fistfull of Silvers] and [Thirst Unending]
6. Accept [Report to Lanthan Perilon]

8. Accept [Aggression].

In this mage talent leveling guide I want to show you the 2 most common and most popular mage leveling specs. What else could it be? The Frost AoE build and the Fire build, of course!

Let’s start with the Fire Spec:

Mage Talent Leveling Guide Fire

At level 80, this is what your talent trees should look like! When it comes to the progression, start off with the most important fire talents: The talents that improve your critical hit chance and damage the most!

A good fire leveling spec always focuses on destroying a single target as fast as possible, as every mage talent leveling guide will tell you. Big crits is what fire is all about.

One advice: Fire mages are more vulnerable than frost mages due to the lack of defensive spells like ice block etc. Don’t try to take on groups of mobs like you would with the frost spec – the chances that at least a few mobs will get into melee range are too high.

Now, on to the frost AoE leveling build:

Mage Talent Leveling Guide Frost

First of all, you have to know what the frost spec focuses on. I’ve seen a lot of players getting the wrong idea about the frost tree. They think it’s about spamming Frost Bolts and slowing the target.

Well… that’s wrong! Of course you can fight a single mob and kill it slowly… but you can also pull 10+ mobs at once, Frost Nova them all in one spot and nuke them with your AoE spells: Blizzard, Cone of Cold and Frost Nova itself.

What would you rather do? Kill one mob at a time or kill a whole dozen of them at once? Yeah, right!

My mage talent leveling guide recommends you to go for talents that completely freeze the target, but you have to remain in control. This is really important! You do NOT want to randomly freeze or slow a single target. Why? It would make pulling them to one spot much more difficult. And kiting groups of mobs is what this is all about.

Which Mage Leveling Spec Is Better?

There’s no answer to this. As I’ve already written in my other mage talent leveling guide (you should read this one, too!), Frost is more effective when it comes to the numbers, but Fire is easier and less complex.

Try them both and see which one suits your playing style!

Now, there are many ways to play a frost mage. Many players just aim at a single target and cast Frostbolt again and again… but that’s not the real strength of the frost leveling spec.

The plan is to gather lots of mobs that are about your level (to minimize the chances or miss/resist), freeze them and kill of them together with your AoE spells.

The best way to do it is to mount up and gather about 10 mobs. Now Freeze them, blink away and nuke them down with Blizzard and Cone of Cold.

Don’t worry if you don’t do it perfectly from the start. Dying a few times is okay while you practice this strategy since you’re handling a dozen of mobs! But seriously, once you get this strategy going, you will be able to complete every quest that involves killing mobs in no time.

Good frost specs focus on AoE and survivability. The idea is to pull many mobs (up to 10), immobilize them and nuke them down with Blizzard and Cone of Cold.

Advantage: Counting the numbers, frost mages can overall kill more mobs in less time. That increases your leveling speed and helps you to ding 80 faster.

Disadvantage: Handling so many mobs needs strategy and concentration. Make a mistake and you’re dead. You always have to focus on your actions.

The Mage Guide – What Are The Best Stats For Mages?

When I talk about the best mage attributes here, I mainly focus on the ones that help you to level 1-80, and participate in raids. I won’t explain unnecessary stats like strength or agility here as mages don’t need them anyway

Spell Power: Increases the damage of all your spells. This stat is most important to you. It’s a flat amount, which means you get what you see. I recommend you to get as much +spell damage as possible.

Critical Strike Rating: Increases the chance that your spells critically hit. Without any talent, critical hits deal 150% of your regular damage.

If you want to know how much your rating contributes to your crit. chance, you have to divide your critical strike rating by X (a variable depending on your level). Here’s an example:

• At Level 60: 14 crit. rating = +1% crit. chance
• At Level 70: 22 crit. rating = +1% crit. chance
• At Level 80: 46 crit. rating = +1% crit. chance

Intellect (Int.): Increases your mana pool and also increases critical strike rating for spells. Mages always need mana and +crit. chance. The calculation is similar to the one above, but this time the variable depends on both your level AND your class. Here’s an example for mages:

• At Level 60: 59 Int = +1% crit. chance
• At Level 70: 80 Int = +1% crit. chance
• At Level 80: 166 Int = +1% crit. chance

Stamina: More health is always good, although you probably will always be fragile and squishy.

Hit Rating etc.: Once you get to level 80 and start raiding or playing PvP, other stats become more important. One of them is your hit rating which determines how often you hit with your spells. Missing the target decreases your DPS a lot.

Mage Guide For Stats – Your Priorities

Whenever you can choose between items with different stats, here’s the priority list that I would always recommend:

Spell Power > Critical Strike Rating > Intellect >Stamina > Hit Rating etc.

Now, just by focusing on these stat priorities you should be able to get much more out of your mage: Deal more damage, kill mobs faster and complete every quest with less effort.

Talking about quests: Did you know that many inexperienced players waste their time doing “junk-quests”? Those quests are designed to slow you down: They take lots of time and in the end give you little or no experience and crappy items.
